Believe it or not, there are still a few remnants of old-growth forest in Ohio. As white settlers began to move into the Midwest, most of the forests began to fall. A few pieces of land managed to escape the westward expansion and wholesale eradication of Ohio's once vast forested lands.
Tucked away in Eastern Ohio, on what was once the Dysart family's land in Belmont County, is a small reminder of those glorious days of a forested Ohio. Eventually, the Dysart family sold their farm land, which was purchased by the Nature Conservancy to protect it. In 1967 the forested area was bought by Ohio University. It is now managed by Ohio University as a research laboratory for its students and faculty, and is open to the public.
We spent the day exploring the trails and viewing the wonderous and enormous trees about the area. We took the time to pose for differant action shots, and enjoyed the day about the woods. We also stopped by and visited "Wetzel's Stone" at near by Bark Camp.
